Procedure for checking out items longer than 6 weeks to same customer

While there is no policy on letting a customer have an item for longer than 6 weeks, the procedure (per Fred Schumacher) for checking out an item to the same customer that has already had the item checked out for 6 weeks is:

  • · The customer must bring the item in if they have already had it checked out for 6 weeks, i.e. renewed twice. (We need to see the item after 6 weeks.)
  • · The customer may check out that item right then again and have it renewed twice IF there are no other holds on that item.

Discards

If you are assigned to Discards and you do not know how to do it, or are unclear about the process, see me before you begin.

When discarding, do only as much as can fill a box or two at a time. We do not need to have piles on trucks or on the back table waiting to be discarded. If you must leave a pile, put a note on it.

Shelving/Weeding

Shelving Assignments

Joanie: adult Spanish, adult AV

Renee: adult non-fiction

Darrell: YA

Monique: juvenile biography, juvenile Spanish, classics

Amanda: picture books, chapter books

Venus: easy readers, flimsies, juvenile paperbacks, board books, juvenile AV

Carol: adult fiction

Regina: juvenile non-fiction

Shu Mei: large print, new books, test guides, anything else that needs to be shelved

Other Volunteers: to be determined

Shelve what you are assigned to shelve. If you finish your assignment, then shelve anything that needs to be shelved.

When you are scheduled to shelve, go in the back, get an empty truck and load it up from the To Be Shelved area in the workroom. Don't overload the truck to the point that you won't be able to finish it in an hour or so. Do not clutter up the back with trucks "ready to be shelved." Do not park trucks in the "waiting to shelve/sorting aisle."

As you shelve, be sure to weed duplicate books and any that are in bad condition. Be sure to separate the Duplicates to Float from the Discards that are in bad condition.

Bookdrop Procedure

If you are scheduled for bookdrop/phone, check in the bookdrop throughout the hour, load it on a truck and put the books in the proper places in the To Be Shelved area in the workroom. Do not bring it to the desk and put it on the trucks behind the desk. Those trucks are for in-person returns only.

The only exceptions are A/V and juvenile paperbacks/flimsies/uncats. Put the A/V on the A/V truck and the juvie things in the bins behind the desk that Venus shelves. If the A/V truck is full, put it in the A/V To Be Shelved area.

Depending on the amount in the bookdrop, you may have several loads throughout the hour. Don't wait until the end to try and offload a truck in the last minutes. Shelve the items neatly in the To Be Shelved area.

A/V Discards

Beginning today, when you weed DVDs and CDs, please give them to Darrell instead of putting them in the discards area in the workroom. Thanks, Joanie
